News: A Gaming TV Channel?

Yes, you did read the title correctly. There is currently plans for a gaming TV channel to be released in the UK on Virgin and Sky TV.

Ginx TV CEO Michiel Bakker has revealed that Ginx TV will be released towards the end of November and will be showing Video Gaming related TV shows, with at least 4 of these being shown from launch. However after a few days these will obviously start to become repeats as Michiel Bakker explains.

“You have to understand that in a 24 hour channel there will be elements of repeat. We’re not doing 24 hours fresh content one hour after the other. That would be too ambitious. So there’s a healthy level of repeat in it.”

There are hopes that the shows will branch out to those light-hearted gamers who play their Wii’s fanatically, but will also satisfy the needs of the more hardcore gamer.

“I wouldn’t be a cool dad if I made a gaming channel just about light gamers. You cannot not make programmes for hardcore gamers. They’re the bullseye demographic. Of course we’re going to give them something.”

“There will be a place where hardcore gamers feel really at home, and it might be post 10 o’clock at night, post 11 o’clock at night. Even the channel branding and feel of the channel will probably get a bit darker and edgier. As it moves into the morning it will become a bit more fluffy, a bit more Wii-like.”

Some Gamers may remember the existence of a previous Gaming TV channel called xleague.tv which featured shows of a similar nature, featuring presenters such as Larry Bundy Jr (@LarryBundyJr on Twitter). Chart shows, Retro shows, review shows and TV gaming tournaments. So this won’t be the first TV Gaming channel but since xleague.tv shut down in 2009 it will be the only one for us gamers to watch.

Ginx will initially focus on game reviews, but will expand to include shows that go deeper on other subjects. Expect to see it air near the end of November, we will make sure to update you upon the release of a date.
