Fallout: New Vegas. What to expect.

Fallout: New Vegas is the newest incarnation of Obsidian Entertainment’s Post-Apocalyptic RPG series.

Set 3 years after Fallout 3, New Vegas is the chronologically latest in the Fallout series but is not officially a sequel. The player will play in Las Vegas, Nevada and the Mojave Desert (which in-game is known as the Mojave Wasteland). The Las Vegas setting does however vary from past installment’s settings. That being that Las Vegas has not been directly struck by a nuclear attack. This is reflected by its building’s which have remained intact, and it’s residents have minimal mutations. The city has been divided into factions and there are various recognisable landmarks present in the game. These include the Hoover Dam and the Helios 1 solar energy plant.

New Vegas places the player as a courier. Whilst delivering a package to a town called Primm with a platinum poker chip and NCR war documents,  the courier is found unconscious in a shallow grave after being shot. The courier is treated for their injuries and then the player enters the character creation screen.

Gameplay wise the game is mainly improvements on what Fallout 3 established. There is new features such as weapons, new attacks and the ability to use sights on all guns. The reputation system known to players of the earlier Fallout games was missing from Fallout 3, but with all the Factions present in New Vegas Obsidian felt it necessary to reintroduce the system.

As it’s set in Las Vegas, Obsidian added a rather important feature. Gambling. Wouldn’t be Vegas without it right. So yes, you can gamble in Fallout New Vegas. Poker and Slots are just 2 of your methods to virtual gambling success in New Vegas.

For all of you who find Fallout to be too easy, there is also a Hardcore mode which adds more realism and intensity to the game with the following changes.

  • Healing over time rather than instant healing
  • Healing of crippled limbs requires a high medicine skill and medical equipment
  • Ammunition has weight
  • Requirement of water consumption to avoid dehydration and eventual death
  • Requirement of food consumption and sleeping to avoid starvation and sleep deprivation

Finally, Fallout: New Vegas will be released to the EU on October 22nd. With that you are once again up to speed with an upcoming game, so I shall now bid you farewell.
